Deborah Asiimwe
Asiimwe Deborah Kawe a.k.a Deborah Asiimwe was born in Kiruhura, Uganda. She is an awardwinning playwright, producer, and performer. Currently a cocurator and producer of the Kampala International Theatre Festival in Kampala, Uganda, Asiimwe has worked with Sundance Institute Theatre Program, leading the East Africa initiative for six years, and she continues to be associated with the Institute on its new initiative in North Africa and the Middle East. She received a diploma in music, dance and drama and a BA in theatre and performing arts from Makerere University in Kampala-Uganda; she earned an MFA in writing for performance from the California Institute of the Arts. Asiimwe’s recent plays include Will Smith Look Alike, Forgotten World, Cooking Oil, Appointment with gOD, Un-entitled to mention but a few. In 2015 Asiimwe became a writing fellow at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany, and a guest lecturer/artist at Pomona College in Claremont, California, USA.
