Occasional Criticism

For the launch of his Solitude publication Occasional Criticism on October 26th, Mike Sperlinger invited the film programmer Madeleine Bernstorff to present extracts from some newly-digitised audio recordings which she had made during film screenings at Cinema Sputnik in Berlin in the 1980s. The day before the event, Mike spoke to Madeleine about the history of the recordings and the contemporary fate of cinephilia.

The podcast includes two short extracts from Madeleine’s recordings. Also mentioned in their discussion are Laura Mulvey’s famous essay »Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema«, the filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger, Roland Barthes’ »Leaving the Movie Theater«, Kevin B. Lee’s film Transformers: The Premake and the film curator Ian White (whose selected writings Mike edited during his time at Solitude).
