Developing a critical understanding of current political and cultural developments conditioned by media technologies is important for budding artists.

During an experimental workshop by Susanna Flock at École nationale supérieure d’art de Bourges, the students were asked to think about random topics assigned to them by chance.

Media competence seems to be one of most crucial assets in the age of »filter bubbles« and »fake news.« Inspired by the articles of the »Random Article generator« of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia the students created the following artistic contributions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shalom_Sharabi

I had the article about Shalom Sharabi, whose major accomplishment was to codify the kezayit of matzots. The kezayit is a unit of volume based on the size of an average olive: I found that it was very absurd as there’s no such thing as an average olive, but if you admit there is you can see the whole world as ruled by olives. I wrote a text to explain my theory of olives, sounding very serious but at the

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kayode_Are

»Celebrate with me« is a video I made about something I found on the Wikipedia Page of Kayode Are. Something we have in common. I discovered that in 1999, the year I was born, he became the Director General of The State Security Service of Nigeria. Twenty years ago our lives changed! I wanted to celebrate with him this date and I wrote an email that I illustrated in this video where I blow a candle on a big slice

wiki/Aneurysm_of_sinus_of_Valsalva

For this workshop, I had to work on the »Aneurysm of sinus of Valsalva.« I had no idea what it was about, all I knew is that it dealt with both science and medicine and I liked it! I tried to create a realistic heart made out of clay, then I proceeded to use wool so as to make the veins and the arteries and I also added some details with acrylic. I noticed that the color of the heart

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yunzhongzi

The random article was Yunzhongzi’s, a Chinese novel character. A sentence describing him struck me: »heart of cloud, mind of fluidity.« I finally came to this short fiction/report about very true undeniable scientific facts. As a slow cloud-gazer, I was glad to work in this field and to share one of the things I like. And I linked this with all the love I can find in every bottom of the Internet, that makes me always happy. Alt + 3 Alt +

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jones_House

This is an architectural plan designed on the site kozikaza (simulation site of construction of house plans). The Jones House is the style of home with high-end Creole architecture. Through this plan and this proposal of architecture and housing, I propose a simple form, only on the ground floor, airy and without many accessories. This is obviously not a house to live daily but a second home for the richest. I then wanted to represent the importance of the place

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Andr%C3%A9-lez-Lille

Saint-Andre-lez-Liles, small town in the periphery of Lille, in the northern part of France. A Wikipedia article shows where the town is localized, but no further information is available. Information, etymologically meaning to form a shape: how does the digital space form our reality ? If information from the digital world participates in forming our real world through diffusion of informations based on the reality, what would the lack or excess of information mean for reality? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f16zk57MHws&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=Kyo-HyunKim Kyo-Hyun Kim, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Andr%C3%A9-lez-Lille

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraqi_National_List

My subject was a complicated one but an interesting one, and it’s not easy to find information. Because there are many sources of information that contradict each other. And of course the different protagonists have opposing opinions. I’m not an expert in politics at all, but I know about one thing, which is that a big and rich country like the United States never takes positions without benefitting from it. They have no problem with problematic people, and Iyad Allaoui

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1590s_BC

My Wikipedia article was about 1590s B.C., and it was quite empty, except for two or three obscure names. I focused on the name of Mursili, who was the Hitties’ king, near Babylon. As he’s a total stranger nowadays. My aim was to tag his name in random places (most of them are in Bourges but there are also some in Paris and Lyon). I wanted to arouse people’s curiosity, because it’s not a common name at all. Even if

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palimino

These are the pics from my work about Palimino, a place that is not well known. This place has a pretty beach that is good for surfing. I decided to make some drawings and think about a kind of feeling which makes me dream. The painting is the final piece of my reflection. It is a kind of projection from my mind, my experience, and my fantasies.   Marie Kerob, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palimino, 2019

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayushman_Mitra

I made this small 3D picture for the workshop assignment. The artwork on the wall is one of the paintings made by the artist I found, Ayushman Mitra. I used an algorithm to convert a picture of the painting into a 3D model with volume; the warmer the color, the higher it went, creating something similar to an imaginary landscape from an Instagram screenshot. I then put the artwork into a preset 3D room where a normal painting would traditionally
