Goodbye

We overslept. Now it must go quickly. We check out online. For breakfast we shovel pancakes into our mouths. We change money, pack. Here we go. Mom still wants a souvenir.

Ilya, too, was once arrested. He was a young father at the time, in his early thirties. He was locked into a tiny prison cell, only nine square meters, with seven other men. He spent the first two days in darkness without food and water.

Once he was forced at 20 degrees below freezing to stand in an open truck in the inner courtyard for eight hours. The police threatened him to drive with him to the forest and shoot him there.

When Ilya saw that they were torturing young people, too, he lost respect for them. Later he was imprisoned again … for his activity for foreign broadcasters. Again and again, the secret service tried to recruit him to spy on American journalists.

It was all in vain. Ilya was obviously not cooperative enough to be recruited. Considering such stories, my own life seems very privileged. And I wonder which of us would have the courage and the backbone to resist as he did.

At the airport we say goodbye to him warmly.

Goodbye Ilya. Dosvidaniya.

Goodbye Ernst. Pakoysya s mirom.

Abschied

Doswidanja.

Tschüss Ernst. Pakoysya s mirom.
