Red Woman

This piece was inspired by Himba women from Namibia and Mozambique.
The ovaHimba are a semi-nomadic tribe that are famous for their distinctively red skin, unique braided hair styles and decorations.
Himba women rub their bodies with Otijze which is a mixture of butter fat and ochre. The red mixture protects their skin from the harsh climate and also acts as symbols of earth, blood and life.
An interesting fact about the tribe is that the women are known to perform more labor intensive work than men. Their duties include carrying water, building homes and milking the cows. Meanwhile the men handle political tasks and trials in the village.
